The castle

The castle building, in which the 933-egge castle hotel Altmuhl River valley is located, was built around 1600 during the bloom of the renaissance era next to a castle fortress which was destroyed in the so-called Lowler-War during the 15th century. After the purchase of the castle facility by the jurist Dominicus von Bassus in the year 1684, the castle remained property of the von Bassus family for more than two and a half centuries and served, among others, as hunting castle.

"Hofmark" Museum in the castle

In addition to the hotel with the restaurant, the castle also has a court museum. Numerous exhibits illustrate the history of the castle and the town during the different epochs. The largest bronze belt of the Celts' time, valuable decorated fibulas or the monstrance with a chip of the holy cross of Jesus Christ belong to only a few of the outstanding exhibits. The primitive times are represented by two exemplars that show the smallest dinosaur and the earliest primary bird that were found close to the town.

Climatic spa town Riedenburg at the Altmuhl River

The climatic spa town Riedenburg, which counts about 5500 residents, stretches out at both shores of the Altmuhl River. In addition to the main town, the large town area has 11 other city parts. Numerous fossils of the stone age prove that it belongs to the oldest european settlement areas. The town was first documentary mentioned in the year 1111. Already in the first half of the 13th century, the village became a merchandise area and before the year 1329 a town. In the 20th century, Riedenburg was residence of the county Riedenburg which was divided in 1972 and integrated into the county Kelheim on the Donau / Danube River (about 26 km away from the castle hotel).

The landmark of Riedenburg is the impressive castle Rosenburg, which hosts the falcon court and the hawk museum today. Another famous sight is the castle Prunn, which is known as a perfect example for a knight's castle. In addition, the ruins of the castles Rabenstein and Tachenstein also belong to the town area of Riedenburg. Riedenburg has many cultural highlights to offer. Besides the court museum, which is mentioned above, the crystal museum and the farm museum invite for visiting.

During the main season, there are boats on the Altmuhl River which commute daily from Riedenburg downstream in direction Kelheim at the confluence of the Altmuhl River and the Danube River as well as upstream in direction of Beilngries on the Altmuhl River. The driving time on the boat between Riedenburg and Kelheim takes about 2 hours, the driving time on the boat between Riedenburg and Beilngries takes about 3 hours. You have the possibility to take a boat cruise through the breakout of the Danube River to the Monastery Weltenburg and back. From Kelheim on the Altmuhl River and the Danube River. The driving time from Kelheim to Weltenburg takes about 40 minutes (upstream the Danube River), the driving time from Weltenburg to Kelheim takes about 20 minutes (downstream the Danube River).

It was probably built by the castle lords of Regensburg in the beginning of the 13th century. The castle facility, whose core originates from the Middle-Ages, is amended by renaissance buildings in the outer castle area. A famous jewel of the renaissance style is the gazebo, which reaches through two stories, on the northern corner of the northeast wing. The inner castle area is seperated from the back-country by a moat. The roman castle donjon takes in the front part of the main castle. Worth seeing are also the mural paintings in the castle chapel which originate from the time around the year 1560. Today, the castle Rosenburg hosts a privately run falcon court with a hunting museum and a falconry museum. A visit of the castle facility is only possible in combination with a visit of the falcon court.

This matter of fact comes from its location on a rock, which looms in the middle of a forest. Nature and works of mankind are combined in a harmonic way here. The castle Prunn has its origins in a castle which was built during the 11th and 12th century. The donjon of the original castle, which is 31 meters high, has remained among other witnesses. In the 16th century, the facility was expanded to a renaissance castle and in the 18th century, the Jesuits let the castle chapel and several other rooms be restyled in rococo style.

Since 1988, there's a farm museum in an agricultural farm in Echenburg, a city part of Riedenburg, (about 13 km southeast of the 933-egge castle hotel Altmuhl River valley). The collection contains agricultural devices and machines from the industrial revolution until the Second World War. The museum does not only offer the exhibition, but also wants to demonstrate former ways of agricultural work to the visitors. The shows, which last about 1 hour, take place only on Sunday afternoons for groups from 15 people.
